Industrial Axial Fan Impellers

Industrial Axial Fan Impellers — UTEK-DELE Axial Fan Range

An industrial axial fan impeller is a balanced assembly: the impeller blades mounted on their hub, corrected as one rotating body and supplied ready to fit on a shaft. Treating the impeller as an assembly rather than a set of loose parts is what makes a replacement behave like the original.

UTEK-DELE builds impellers from 180 mm to 2200 mm across the fixed-angle, adjustable-pitch and special blade families. Each impeller is balanced on a hand laser balancing machine before shipment, and the blade count, hub family and pitch setting are recorded so the impeller can be reproduced later without a second balancing campaign.

What an Impeller Assembly Contains

The impeller is the rotating part of the fan, and every element in it affects balance and airflow:

  • Impeller blades — moulded PAG or PAGAS, or die-cast aluminium where temperature requires it

  • The hub that carries the blades — H-6 to H-12, the Z family, or W-3 to W-10

  • Fasteners and, where used, the taper bush that clamps the impeller to the shaft

  • The balancing correction applied to the finished impeller

Because the impeller is balanced as an assembly, a spare impeller can be fitted in the field without a balancing rig, which matters on equipment that is serviced away from a workshop.

Impeller Balancing and Vibration Control

Balancing is the step that separates an impeller from a collection of blades. It is measured and corrected with the blades mounted, because the assembly is what runs on the machine:

  • Measurement locates the heavy point of the assembled impeller

  • Correction brings the impeller and hub into balance

  • Verification confirms the result before the impeller is released

  • Recording keeps the setting so a replacement impeller can be matched

The effect is practical rather than theoretical: a balanced impeller runs without the low-frequency rumble that an out-of-balance wheel produces at low speed, and it does not loosen its own fasteners over a service interval.

Impeller Sizes and Hub Families

Impeller classDiameter rangeBlade countHub familyTypical impeller duty
Small impellers180-745 mm5-12H-6 to H-12, PMAX plateEngine cooling, compact cooling packs
Medium impellers250-1343 mm1-16Z-3 to Z-18Heat exchangers, HVAC, compressors, process cooling
Large impellers1000-2200 mm6-12W-3 to W-10Cooling towers, generator sets, moving-air units

The hub family is confirmed with the impeller, never separately: blade mass, shaft diameter and the mounting pattern all have to agree before an impeller can be released for production.

Impeller Materials and Temperature Limits

Replacing an Impeller in Service

An impeller is normally replaced rather than repaired, and the aim is a part that needs no adjustment after fitting:

  • The original diameter, blade count and hub family are confirmed from the fan records

  • The replacement impeller is supplied balanced, with the pitch already set for the duty point

  • The shaft interface is checked against the existing taper bush or hub fit

  • The impeller is fitted and the machine returned to service without on-site balancing

Where only the blades are worn, a blade set can be supplied against the existing hub instead of a complete impeller, which is the cheaper route when the hub and shaft are still serviceable.

Impeller Quality Assurance and Traceability

Each impeller is released with its blade count, hub family, material batch and pitch setting recorded. That record is what allows a second impeller to be built for the same fan later, and it is also how a plant keeps several machines on the same impeller specification even when they were commissioned years apart.

The same approach is used for the industrial axial fan propellers composed of these impellers, and for the individual industrial axial fan blades when only the blades are renewed. Production impellers are listed on the H Series, P Series and Equipment and balancing pages.
